Noni Patterns: Felted Bags

Noni Bags felted patterns. Felting covers the uneven knitting of new knitters. It is for this reason that Nora's Noni Bags Patterns felted projects are a great introduction to knitting. It may look complicated, but do not let it intimidate you. The knit felt patterns below do not show you how to knit, so refer to one of our " How to Knit " books on our Knitting Techniques page at http://www.yarn-store.com/knitting-technique-books.htm Other then that, these knit projects are perfect confidence builders.

Do not use super wash wools, cottons, rayons or silks, and do not use any synthetics. These have been coated to be washable without shrinking. Some bleached white wools do not felt and some off white and lighter colors do not felt well. Unless they say unbleached on them. It is always best to knit up and test a small piece.

Nora uses Cascade 220 100% Wool in all her Noni Bag Patterns. Very well known for its excellent felting qualities and extreme range of colors.

Not Just a Baby Bag (No. 133)
Includes accessory bag & changing pad

Use any combination of colors of feltable wool yarn such as Cascade 220.

Nora has been asked many times to design a baby bag. Here, at long last is everything Nora would want herself in a baby bag: a large bag that is so great-looking and practical that any woman would want to carry it. Here's what she loves about this bag: the colorful options (stripes, solid, or bi-color), roomy exterior pockets, customizable shoulder strap, a fold-over flap, and an optional zip closure. Also included: a cosmetic bag and a baby changing pad.

Orange Kitty Hoodie Towel/Blanket in 2 Sizes with Kitty Jammie Bag (No. 505)

We have a kitty named "Orange". He was wild in the beginning and I put food out for him until he was injured. Then I took him in and he's been mine ever since. He is my little boy's sometime playmate (we make toys out of paper and yarn from my studio) and is still devotedly loving. In these towel/blankets, I sought to capture my Orange kitty's happy attitude and good nature, as well as loving softness. Unlike many hoodie towels out there, these are square, so they envelope your little sweetie (little legs too). Two sizes allow you to wrap up infants and later toddlers after bath time. For a wonderfully cozy stroller or Basinette blanket, make the hoodie towel in a soft baby alpaca boucle or other delicious yarn. Just imagine your sleeping babe wrapped up in what you've made.

Included in this pattern are instructions for a cotton towel with kitty paws and kitty hood. Kitty face and paws make this towel extra fun for bath time and play time. The kitty jammie bag keeps rooms tidy and PJs can always be found in the same familiar face/place.

Materials: Small 730 yds of worsted weight (or 370 yds each of 2 colors). Large 1210 yds of worsted weight or (605 yds each of 2 colors). Kitty Jammie Bag 240 yds. Angelika suggests a cotton or cotton blend yarn such as Cascades Sierra. Needles used are US#9 24 or 32" circular needles, and a set of double points, stitch markers, stitch holders and tapestry needle.

Gauge is 4 sts per inch.

Approximate finished dimensions-Excluding hood: Small 27" square. Large 36" square.

Three Nights in a Row (No. 135) 3 lovely little bags with Stephanotis & Rosettes

Use any combination of colors of feltable wool yarn such as Cascade 220.

Nora's inspiration for these three little treats were small beaded bags she has in her very small antique bag collection. The beaded bags are from the 30s and 40s, and, conjure images of young women dashing from one social even to the next . . . three nights in a row. These bags are small enough, and easy enough to make, that you can knit them up quickly with just a skein or two of yarn. The Stephanotis flowers and rosettes are beautiful and also quick knits. Felt, sew to the purse frame and you are ready for a night out. Perfect for holiday parties, a weekend getaway, date night, or for brides and bridal party!

Even if your social schedule is not as busy as the heroines who were Nora's muses, these bags are delightful to carry yourself or to make as gifts for dear friends, loved family members, or little girls in your life.

Materials: Thursday Night bag: 200 yds. Friday Night bag: 110 yds. Saturday Night bag: 180 yds. ALL BAGS: 6.8" snap purse frame. US#8 16" and double point needles. Noni Pockets. Stitch Markers.

Stephanotis & Rosettes Knitted Felted Flowers (No. 218)

Use any combination of colors of feltable wool yarn such as Cascade 220.

Madagasgar Jasmine, or Stephanotis, are romantic flowers that whisper of misty mornings, sultry afternoons filled with perfume that no chemist can match, quite. They populate the bouquets of brides and bridal parties. Paired with little rosettes, they are fabulously delicate on bags, on the lapels of jackets, around the necklines of sweaters. Make them in pastels with embellished yarn and they are ethereal. Make them in darker tones for luxurious floral richness. Imagine the possibilities and you can knit them. . .

Gerbera Daisies Knitted Felted Flowers (No. 219)

Use any combination of colors of feltable wool yarn such as Cascade 220.

Modern, optimistic, playful, electrically colorful like little suns. This is the Gerbera Daisy. Put one or several on a bag and you've made a statement. Make a bouquet. Make extra long stems that twine around each other and sew them on the corner of a lap blanket, bedspread, pillow, or the hem and back of a winter coat. Now you take over. Make something beautiful. Make something you love. Love what you make!

Dancing Princesses Coat (No. 1104) A top-down knitted coat & leg warmers with apple blossoms

These little coats & leg warmers (in straight and flared styles) are fashioned after the romantic little coats that the 12 Dancing Princesses most certainly would have slipped on over the silks chiffon dresses and brocades they wore each night to dance with the 12 Princes. . . if the underground passages they trod held a chill.

Make in a solid color or in colors that dazzle: the color work is simple - perfect for a first project. Fancy enough to leave unembellished, but also the perfect canvas for the apple blossom flowers included in the pattern. The perfect coat for your little dancer!

Every woman needs a classic sweater in her wardrobe, this classic sweater: the pullover is basic enough to wear with jeans and a t-shirt on your way to the farmer's market or to dress it up with a pair of tailored trousers for the office. The cardigan - embellished with cherry blossoms, made in embellished yarn or in delicious cashmere without any embellishment at all - is beautiful, and timeless. #212 A Bouquet of Shirley Poppies

Shirley Poppies (Papaver rhoeas) are flowers that are as tenacious as they are delicate. They will start to grow in winter, even as there is snow or frost still on the ground. When the weather warms, the poppy plants begin to grow quickly and by late may they are covered with blooms: white with red tips, red with pink centers, pink with yellow centers. . . the combinations are many and all of them are beautiful. Their petals are soft as silk and more delicate than the finest gauzy tissue cottons. They withstand so much yet hate to be picked, wilting quickly.

This pattern allows the intrepid knitter to bring the beauty of the Shirley Poppy inside to stay. Nora has replicated, in this pattern some of her favorite poppy color combinations as well as their buds and seed pods to that you might make a bouquet that is as wild and wonderful as the poppies in the garden.

#120 Winter Berries

Order pattern and its supplies here.

Winter interest they call it when you plant shrubs in the garden that yield up beautiful orange, red, or white berries in fall. This bag offers winter interest all right! Covered with brilliant crimson or shimmering white berries, this unstructured bag in two sizes and colorways is a glorious statement you will love creating and admiring once it is finished.
This bag is knit in one piece. A zipper closes the bag and a separate strap is attached after felting using purchased hardware. I-cord branches and bobble berries are arranged and sewn on by hand. The addition of Tilli Tomas' hand-beaded yarns lends this bag an even more luxurious feel and makes the winter berries branches appear as if they are glittering with ice that looks white in the bright light of morning or red in the fading light of a winter sunset.

#121 The Medallion Travel Bag

Order pattern and its supplies here.

Picture yourself carrying this bag while wearing a long black coat or a short red leather jacket walking through a snowy park, the trees in dark silhouette. On the other hand, there is no telling what could happen when you go away with your things packed in such a gorgeous travel bag. Knit all in one piece in Fair Isle, this bag requires minimal finishing once it is felted. Simply add handles, which may be riveted or sewn on, insert a zipper, and you are ready for any adventure.

#405 3 Diagonal Backpacks

Order pattern and its supplies here.

This backpack, with its unconventional diagonal body and flap shape, is chic, sleek, and fun in three vibrant variations that can be made to wear over either the right or left shoulder.
The shape of this bag was inspired by a backpack worn by a young Australian man I saw walking the streets of Hong Kong. This felted version is meant to evoke the spunky urban landscape and mix of cultures in world cities.
For those who like to keep it simple, there is a plain contrast color flap. The concentric circles of intarsia on the flap of Eye of the Buffalo were originally inspired by a Jasper Johns painting that featured this brilliant combination of gold and turquoise. The bulls eye is finished with optional crimson lines of chain stitch embroidery. The graphic green O that dazzles against a fiery orange background is also knit in simple intarsia ideal for intrepid beginners.
The bag with its flap is knit in one piece. The curved strap, which fits the shape of the body beautifully, is knit separately and attached after felting.

Eye of the Water Buffalo: 6 hanks of Cascade 220 #8393 Navy & 1 hank of #7827 Goldrod

The bag body and handle tabs of Cypress Knees are knit in one piece. I-cord "knees" are added before felting, with chain stitch embroidery added after felting.

#501 Round Pegs in a Square: An Accent Pillow in 3 Styles & 2 Colorways

Order pattern and its supplies here.

Liven up your home or office with these felted pillows in two colorways and three possible modes of construction. The bold design of four circles clustered in the center of a square lends a contemporary feel to your space-whether they are on a couch, the floor, in a chair, or outside on garden furniture as they are pictured here.
Knit the two colorways in one pillow rather than two, creating an exciting reversible design by working the Two-Faced Pillow. This pillow is knit in one long piece, the sides stitched up with a tapestry needle before felting. The only finishing after felting is the addition of a zipper and the insertion of a pillow form and you are ready to enjoy a new look to your space.
Single-Faced Pillow is for knitters who also like to sew. This version has a fabric back as only the front is knit. The pillow is stitched together, and a zipper added, by hand or machine after the front is felted.
The Single Faced-Pillow with Felted Back is knit all in one piece leaving an opening for the zipper. This elegant construction requires the least finishing of the three options and is the one pictured on the pattern.
