![]() #212 A Bouquet of Shirley PoppiesShirley Poppies (Papaver rhoeas) are flowers that are as tenacious as they are delicate. They will start to grow in winter, even as there is snow or frost still on the ground. When the weather warms, the poppy plants begin to grow quickly and by late may they are covered with blooms: white with red tips, red with pink centers, pink with yellow centers. . . the combinations are many and all of them are beautiful. Their petals are soft as silk and more delicate than the finest gauzy tissue cottons. They withstand so much yet hate to be picked, wilting quickly. This pattern allows the intrepid knitter to bring the beauty of the Shirley Poppy inside to stay. This pattern allows you to bring tulips into your repertoire of knitted and felted flowers. Nora has designed three different sizes for those differently sized visits to the farmer's stand or grocery store. Small for those times when you only need butter, chocolate, and heavy cream for that delectable dessert; Medium when you need fruit, a few select cheeses, and a bottle of wine or sparkling water; and Really Big for those trips to the Farmer's market and all the tasty treats you find there: organic tomatoes, fresh goat cheese, scones made this morning, and other lovelies. Unlike its cousins, the really big bag has two handles that slant toward each other, so it can be carried easily in your hand or over your arm, and it won't tip all your cargo out onto the floor. ![]() #207 Peony FlowersThese felted peony flowers look good felted or left unfelted. Pattern consists of a medium sized peony, a large peony and an un-opened peony (the flower bud). Needles needed are US#11 (8mm) 12" circular and set of double points in the same size. For 1 large and 1 medium flower: 2 hanks of Cascade 220 color #8010 for the white flower or, 1 hank each of #7801 & 9404 for medium peony. Also an eyelash yarn of pink and another of tangerine (or color your choise) to be used for flower center. (Perhaps Blackjack from Dive. ). Cascade 220 #9459 was used for sepals and stem. |
