Visit Angelika's Yarn Store downtown in Portland Oregon.
Welcome to Fall!! Fall is the season trees and bears go to hibernate. But in a yarn store, the fall is the season of new! New yarns. New patterns. Yarn stores set up new classes. Knitters and crocheters begin new projects for the gift giving season. And Angelika's is no exception. October 1 was the start of our weekly Saturday Open Knitting/Crochet gathering. This casual gathering is simple, but totally enjoyable. Need to work on project away from curious eyes? Come on in. I would love to see what you are all working on! We've brought in a few new novelty yarns for fast gifts from Universal. The Marina is really causing quite a stir. It doesn't even need a pattern. One hank, one evening! Also from Universal is Bamboo Bloom hand dyed. 1 hank and 1 mitered scarf pattern (FREE). Speaking of that, 1 hank of Shepherd Bulky and 1 evening for a hat! Did you see the cover of the Knit Simple Fall 2011 issue? That's Shepherd Bulky in Bittersweet. Customer Colette knit one done up the the store out of the Zombie BBQ color. See in the photo how it spiraled! Everyone loves it!
Also new this fall is Designaknit for hand knitters. This program has been used by machine knitters for years. Just released is a version for hand knitting. Designaknit 8 for Hand Knitters is a powerful, affordable CAD/CAM program for designing knitwear. Scroll down for a details on Designaknit 8 for Hand knitters.
Our standard stock yarns have grown and we had to totally rework our database of yarns. Check out our Yarn Standards page to see the expanded selection of yarns in size order!

As I said in my last newsletter, I've set up my Silver Reed SK280 punchcard machine. Instead of a jacket in fairisle, I switched to a fairisle vest with solid color side panels. The vest is for a woman, but in a man's dapper suit vest style. Yarn is a fingering weight washable wool.
My next plan is setting up the
Silver Reed SK155 bulky knitting machine
. I've already swatched out a super bulky yarn, in bright crayon colors. The yarn is Encore Bulky and just barely knit on the machine at the highest tension. I will back it with two layers of flannel. Done in strips, it will be fun to incorporate extra colors. A heavy blanket, perfect for a toddlers bed.
Biennial Knitting Machine SeminarPlans for the Pacific NW Machine Knitting Seminar are being set. Teachers are being engaged and the location and date is all secure. May 11 & 12, 2012, located at the downtown Vancouver Convention Center. Here is an email sign up list. I will use this list to let you know of teachers and when registration opens, as soon as they are worked out. This list is specific only to this seminar and will not be used for any other purpose, nor shared/sold to any other person or company. When notices are sent out, there is a fast, easy unsubcribe at the bottom of each letter, should you decide you no longer want to be notified.
On Sunday, May 13, after the machine seminar, Lily Chin will be teaching hand knitting techniques, in Angelika's Yarn Store. Yes, it is Mother's Day, so bring your Mom. Or make it a Mom's day where you and other Moms take the day for themselves! Registration will open up soon. Seating will be limited.

DesignaKnit 8 !! Check out my DesignaKnit web page for pricing. And if you already have DAK7, order your upgrades here!
Designaknit 8 has been released. And the wait was well worth it.
This CAD program is designed strictly for creating knitted garments, pieces or artwork to be hand knit or machine knit. Now available in 4 packages, each package has a selection of sizes and styles of garments. These can be adjust to your specific sizes and need.
HandKnit is the newest in the DAK line-up as a stand-alone program for hand knitters. It has the TrueType KnitWriteDK font with over 200 symbols. Design the garment shape, design the stitches, merge the two together, print out the instructions or follow along on the screen. Each stage has incredible flexibility and creative freedom.
Standard is a basic knitting machine program. Design your garment shape, the stitches, merge the two together. Either download to your electronic machine or manually follow along on the screen.
Professional is same as basic, but includes a section to edit shapes from the garment shaping or to simply create new from scratch. Original pattern drafting has no rules!
Complete is both the Professional package and the HandKnit package. Many designers work in both area, me included!!
DesignaKnit is a fully loaded design program and heads above all other knitwear design programs.
There are also many paper printouts. I discussed this briefly in my blog on October 18. Click here to read a brief summary.

Rozetti Lace Ribbon Novelty Fun!The trends toward novelty and playful yarn continue to grow. Single hank, small projects using unusual yarn is gaining in popularity. Universal's Rozetti Marina and Marina Glitz Yarn is just that and more! This strange and wonderful yarn is actually a wide band of open ribbon lace, that only the edges are knit through. Marina is perfect for the holiday coming up. I see many knitters making these up and selling at the holiday bazaars, in boutiques and as gifts to coworkers. |

Uptown Worsted and Uptown DKIn response to the demand of good quality washable yarns at respectable prices, we've brought in Universal's Uptown DK and Uptown Worsted. A high quality yarn with a rich, vibrant palette of colors. Uptown's anti-pilling acrylic makes it a great choice for soft, wearable projects. Uptown is a great price at $5.00 for over 200 yards for the worsted weight and 270 yards for the DK.
Henry retired his knitting needles 4 years ago, but the Uptown DK called to him and he knit himself a pair of fingerless gloves. Here in downtown Portland we walk to and from work, and fingerless mitts are perfect for the winter! Stayed tuned to our facebook page. I've started myself the same fingerless mittens in Cascade 220 Wool. |

Lorna's Laces SolemateLorna's Laces newest yarn is Solemate. It is a 55% superwash merino, 15% nylon and 30% Outlast viscose sock yarn. It has a nice tight twist just like Shepherd Sock, but it's three ply instead of four.
This crazy "Outlast" fiber interacts with your body's microclimate to moderate temperature from being too hot or too cold. It was used by NASA. Ferrari uses it for their race car seats.
Angelika's is stocking a few colors and waiting to see what other colors you would like! At 7 sts = 1"/US7 needle, it is a #1 Superfine weight. There are 425 yds per 100g ball and needs only 1 hank for most socks. Click here to see what colors are in stock, what colors are on order, and to order any other color in the over 180 shades in Lorna's Laces color line. |
