DesignaKnit, often referred to simply as DAK is a computer program for creating garments and designs for machine and hand knitting. It is the #1 program used in the world for designing.
You could generalize Designaknit Knitting Software into 3 sections:
Section 1 is garment shaping in both Standard and Professional Designaknit Knitting Software.
In this section you select the type of neck line, sleeve, body style and size. A screen comes up with the garment you have designed. In this
screen you can slightly alter SOME of the measurements.
Section 2 is in Professional OnlyDesignaknit Knitting Software .
Section 2 takes the garment you set up in Section 1 and lets you tweak and manipulated those garment pieces to your heart's content. You don't have to
start with a garment from Section 1. You can start complete from scratch in Section 2.
Section 3 is the stitch designer section in both Standard and Professional
Designaknit Knitting Software.
We can drop in on Section 3 at any time and work on a fairisle, tuck or any pattern. Fairisle seems to be the most popular because of
all the colors we can apply to it.
Alot happens in Section 3. After we have created and saved a design we can jump back to Section 1 or Section 2 and pull up a garment we designed. Going back to Section 3, we go
to the Shapes Menu and integrate the garment pieces with our fair isle. This means we can lay the garment pieces down on our fabric to see what our garment will look like. We can
also move the pieces around in case a large polkadot is resting in a bad spot !
Section 4 is Interactive Knitting in both Standard and Professional Designaknit Knitting Software.
With the appropriate cable your computer and your knitting machine can be linked. For the electronic knitting machines you can download that fairisle pattern
to the knitting machine, then prepare to knit that garment. If you use the "knit from screen" function,

can tell you what row you are on, it will "talk" to you to tell you to decrease or increase on the right or left side. It will even tell you to change colors and what feeder you are changing.
Punchcard knitting machines will need to manually punch their cards, but they can also knit
from screen.
This is a REAL generalization for those who wonder just what DAK will do for them.

Note: to connect to a knitting machine, you must have a serial port that is dedicated to the knitting machine connection. This port can not be shared by another device. For Silver Reed machines there is a USB cable available.

Silver Concept Designaknit Knitting Software. A basic program that allows the creation of stitch designs and interactive knitting. Concept provides shape files that allow the user to integrate with the stitch design, but does not allow alternation of the shape files. A good basic download only type program. If you want to be able to do shape designing, DAK7 would be a better option. The program includes the cable, but requires the curl cord below. |

The Lace Tool is a special add-on for DesignaKnit. Draw lace patterns instantly, as they will look when knitted, or from a handknit chart, leaving DesignaKnit to work out the lace carriage passes and settings.
